Itineraries

Day 1: Tbilisi

Mtskheta

Mtskheta is the former capital of the eastern kingdom of Georgia, from the 3rd century BC to the 5th century BC. It is also the official religion of the Kingdom where Christianity is proclaimed and continues to be the seat of the Georgian Orthodox Church. The city is tiny, just a 20-minute drive from the capital of Tbilisi. It may not be the best place to drink and dine, but you will find a ticket to the 5th century BC and travel back to ancient times.

Day 2: Tbilisi

Stepantsminda, Tbilisi

According to tradition, Stepantsminda, literally “St. Stephen”, received the name of the Georgian Orthodox monk Stephen, who in this position built a hermitage and later became the Georgian military road. It is controlled by a local giant feudal clan Job Kashvili, which at the end of the 18th century charged tolls to travelers in the region.

Day 3: Tbilisi, Gori

Uplistskhe, Tbilisi

Uplistsikhe (literally “main fortress”) is located in the eastern part of Georgia, an abandoned rocky city that has played an important role in Georgian history. The site was built at the end of the Bronze Age 1000 BC and lived until the 13th century AD. Between the 6th and 11th centuries BC, Uplistsikhe was one of the most important political and religious centers of the ancient Christian Kartli, one of the predecessors of the State of Georgia.
